Welcome to my new blog!

au·tar·ky [aw-tahr-kee]

the condition of self-sufficiency, especially economic, as applied to a nation.

a national policy of economic independence.

Of all the ancient Greek philosophers, one stands above the rest as a true sage: Epicurus.  His secular humanist doctrine inspired a school of devoted followers for over 700 years, and after the Renaissance he once again gained prominence.  Christopher Hitchens was an Epicurean.  So was Thomas Jefferson.

In today’s globalized and interconnected world, cooperation has become an important ideal and an inevitable, pragmatic, and celebrated way of life.  But Western values persist.  Love of liberty and fierce independence will always stand side by side with the emerging progressive and cooperative models, particulary in America.

I dedicate this blog to Epicurus, to all the Epicureans out there, and all who share our wholesome human values.
